Where you go upon retirement...
Well here's my first post as a retiree and how fittingly, it's about Florida. There were no 4:00pm buffets or any Cadillacs driven (it was Mercedes-Benz convertible from Hertz). After a night in Naples with Lowe and Kavanagh clans, it was off to St. Petersburg for a couple of nights. Stayed at The Vinoy, one of the original destinations of Florida, opened in 1925 and listed on the national register as a historically significant building.
Downtown St. Petersburg turned out to be a pleasant surprise, lots of independent businesses, care taken to preserve character, and virtually no chain stores. Not to mention the Salvador Dali museum - which was unbelievable and hilarious. Hilarity was found in listening to the tourists who had no idea who Dali was and likely saw the museum on a "Top 10 Things to do In..."

Great sunsets at the abandoned Fort DeSoto on the west side of the peninsula where St. Petersburg lies.
